Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree

Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area

A California State Parks unit with redwood trails and designated day-use areas along the South Fork Eel River. Seasonal bridges affect access to some west-bank trails.

Trail

The Taber Nature Trail is on the east side of US 101; other loops can depend on seasonal bridges.

Confusion Hill

A long-running private roadside attraction with a gravity house, redwood shoe house, and seasonal train. Confirm current offerings and admission with the business.

US 101 and Highway 1 junction

Highway 1 meets US 101 north of Leggett. Use Caltrans for current highway restrictions; services become less frequent north of the larger towns.

Richardson Grove State Park

A state park directly off US 101 with old-growth redwoods, nine miles of trails, camping, picnic areas, and South Fork Eel River access.

Parking

Use the park entrance and designated day-use or camping parking.

Viewpoint

The park’s river corridor and grove trails provide views.

Trail

The Racetrack path and other signed park trails begin within the developed park.

Public water access

State Parks identifies swimming or wading in summer from the park; obey posted restrictions.

Benbow Historic Inn dining and lodging

An independently operated historic hotel on the South Fork Eel River with lodging and a restaurant. Availability, menus, and service times come from the inn, not this guide.

Benbow State Recreation Area

A state recreation area on the South Fork Eel River with signed day-use and seasonal recreation managed by California State Parks.

Parking

Use designated state-park access and parking; do not use private lodging property as public river parking.

Garberville visitor services

Garberville is the main southern Humboldt service stop for groceries, fuel, lodging, and local visitor information. Confirm individual businesses directly.

Avenue of the Giants (CA 254)

A roughly 32-mile state highway through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It is mapped separately from US 101 and provides signed access to groves, communities, and park facilities.

Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center

The park’s principal information stop, with maps and interpretation for Humboldt Redwoods. Confirm current service levels on the official park page.

Founders Grove

A signed Humboldt Redwoods grove stop with an established loop through old growth near the South Fork Eel. Use the official park map and designated parking.

Shrine Drive-Thru Tree

A privately operated drive-through tree attraction in Myers Flat on CA 254. It is not a state-park facility; verify vehicle fit, price, and access with the operator.

Scotia Fisheries Museum

A small company-operated exhibit interpreting local fisheries and watershed work in the historic lumber town of Scotia. Confirm access with the operator.

Scotia Lodge

An independently operated 23-room historic hotel with food and beverage service. Current lodging and dining details must be checked with the lodge.

Fernbridge

The historic concrete arch bridge carries CA 211 across the Eel River. View it only from lawful pullouts or public roads; the bridge is active transportation infrastructure.

Ferndale historic district

A walkable commercial district known for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings. Streets and shops are active community spaces, not a preserved theme park.

Ferndale Museum

A nonprofit local-history museum with collections on Ferndale, the Eel River valley, agriculture, earthquakes, and community life. Check current visitor information directly.

Old Town Eureka

A working waterfront commercial district with historic buildings, museums, galleries, restaurants, and local services. Individual businesses set their own hours and access.

Clarke Historical Museum

A nonprofit museum in Old Town interpreting northwestern California history, including Native cultural collections, settlement, industry, and community life.

Morris Graves Museum of Art

The Humboldt Arts Council’s museum in Eureka’s former Carnegie library, with regional and changing art exhibitions. Check the museum’s own calendar before visiting.

Sequoia Park Zoo

A City of Eureka zoo focused on conservation education. Admission and current animal areas are controlled by the zoo; this guide does not imply animal availability.

Redwood Sky Walk

A self-guided elevated interpretive route inside Sequoia Park Zoo. Zoo admission is the point of entry, and weather can affect access.

Fort Humboldt State Historic Park

A state historic park on a Humboldt Bay bluff interpreting the 1853 military post and regional logging history. The official page currently notes building closures, so check before visiting.

Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary

A 307-acre City of Arcata wetland and wastewater-treatment landscape on the Pacific Flyway, with about five miles of walking and biking paths and an interpretive center.

Arcata Community Forest

A city-owned second-growth redwood forest with a signed trail network. The City publishes trail maps and a forest bird checklist; use designated access points.

Cal Poly Humboldt Natural History Museum

A university museum with regional natural-history and science exhibits. Check its official site for current public access and programs.

Ma-le’l Dunes

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dune unit linking forest, salt marsh, dunes, and beach. Vehicle access schedules and pet restrictions protect habitat; read the refuge directions first.

Mad River Beach County Park

A county day-use park with signed parking, beach and river access, a beach trail, wildlife viewing, and a boat ramp. The county lists no restrooms.

The park provides views of the river mouth, dunes, and beach.

Trail

A county beach trail connects the parking area to the coast and river mouth.

Public water access

The county lists access to the Mad River and an operational boat ramp.

Water conditions

This is not a swimming-safety finding. Check river flow, surf, posted warnings, and harmful-algal-bloom information separately.

Trinidad Head

A shore-based coastal viewpoint reached by a walking route around the headland. Offshore wildlife may be visible, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Trinidad Museum

A local museum interpreting Trinidad-area Indigenous, maritime, natural, and community history. Confirm current access with the museum.

Sue-meg State Park

A state park of forested headlands, rocky shore, trails, camping, and cultural interpretation. California State Parks adopted the Yurok place name Sue-meg in 2021.

Luffenholtz Beach and Topena Point

A Humboldt County coastal access point with signed parking and beach viewpoints. Use established paths and check surf conditions before approaching the water.

Humboldt Lagoons State Park

A state-park system of coastal lagoons, wetlands, beach, and forest. Launch locations and conditions vary among Big, Stone, and Freshwater lagoons; use current park maps.

Prairie Creek Visitor Center and Elk Prairie

A park information center beside Elk Prairie and the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Elk may be present; NPS advises at least 25 yards of distance and no approach.

Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway

A paved, approximately ten-mile scenic alternative to US 101 through Prairie Creek Redwoods. It is shown as a separate side route; check park conditions before use.

Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Beach

A remote beach-and-canyon destination reached by Davison Road. Vehicle length limits and seasonal reservations can apply; check the official park page before departure.

Lady Bird Johnson Grove

A ridge-top redwood loop reached from Bald Hills Road, named for the 1969 park dedication site. Road and parking conditions should be checked with NPS.

Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center

The park system’s most comprehensive visitor center, near the mouth of Redwood Creek, with trip-planning information, exhibits, restrooms, and beach access.

Klamath River Overlook

A high, shore-based viewpoint over the Klamath River mouth reached by steep, narrow Requa Road. It supports river, bird, and whale observation without implying a sighting.

Parking

Use the signed overlook parking area; Requa Road is not recommended for RVs or trailers.

Viewpoint

The developed overlook is about 650 feet above the river mouth.

Trail

A signed coastal trail leaves the overlook; consult the park map and conditions.

Public water access

No direct public water access is represented at this high overlook.

Water conditions

Klamath gauge flow is separate from ocean surf, water quality, and legal river-mouth access.

Trees of Mystery

A family-owned redwood attraction with forest trails, a canopy walk, gondola, and the independently curated End of the Trail Museum. Confirm prices and access directly.

Klamath Tour-Thru Tree

A private drive-through tree attraction reached from Klamath. It is separate from park facilities; verify current vehicle limits, admission, and access with the operator.

Coastal Drive and High Bluff Overlook

A narrow park road to ocean and estuary overlooks, including a surviving World War II radar-station site. Sections are one-way or unsuitable for RVs and trailers.

Radar Station B-71

A World War II early-warning radar site disguised as farm buildings along the Coastal Drive corridor. Approach only by the current signed park route.

Battery Point Lighthouse

An 1856 lighthouse on a tidal island. Foot access depends on safe low-tide conditions; verify tour information with the Del Norte County Historical Society.

Ocean World

A privately operated aquarium offering guided interpretation of North Coast marine life. Confirm programs, admission, and accessibility with the business.

Northcoast Marine Mammal Center

A NOAA-authorized nonprofit rescue, rehabilitation, and education center in Beachfront Park. Animals in care and public access vary; use its hotline for distressed marine mammals.

Del Norte County Main Museum

A county historical-society museum with regional, maritime, and lighthouse collections. Check current visiting information with the society.

Point St. George

A public coastal bluff and shore-viewing area northwest of Crescent City with views toward the St. George Reef Lighthouse. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed.

Tolowa Dunes State Park

A state park protecting beach, dunes, wetlands, wooded ridges, and Pacific Flyway habitat north of Crescent City. Use current maps and restrictions; the campground is presently listed closed.

Hiouchi Visitor Center

A northern park information stop near US 199 and the Smith River with trip-planning help for Jedediah Smith and nearby trails.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods Day Use Area

A developed state-park day-use area with parking, toilets, trailhead, scenic view, and direct Smith River beach and small-boat access. A day-use fee applies.

Parking

NPS lists auto and boat-trailer parking through the campground entrance; a day-use fee applies.

Viewpoint

The developed cobble bar provides a signed Smith River view.

Trail

The Nature River Trail and a seasonal hikers’ bridge connect toward Stout Grove.

Public water access

NPS explicitly lists beach/water access and a canoe, kayak, and small-boat launch.

Stout Memorial Grove

An old-growth loop in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, reached from signed parking or seasonally from the day-use-area footbridge. Parking fees can apply.

Grove of Titans and Mill Creek Trail

A boardwalk destination on the Mill Creek Trail created to protect roots and surrounding forest. Stay on the developed route and use only signed trail access.

Howland Hill Road

A narrow, mostly unpaved scenic road through Jedediah Smith Redwoods. NPS states that motorhomes, RVs, and trailers will not fit; use current park guidance.
